VIDEO: Destruction Denied As Pontiac Silverdome Does Not Give In To Botched Implosion Attempt

The Pontiac Silverdome is still there. It has been neglected, given up for dead, its parking lot used as a drag strip, a parking lot for condemned VW diesels, and now its a place that has survived a literal attempt on its life. In the video below you’ll watch what was supposed to be largely the end of the Pontiac Silverdome as a demolition company had been hired to come in, wire the thing up with dynamite, and then implode the structure in onto itself. The idea was there, it was the execution that everyone has found lacking thus far and could get expensive in a hurry for the contractor if they don’t figure it out. Blaming faulty wiring for the problem, the demolition contractor said that basically only one of a couple rings of explosives ignited and had the rest of them popped there would have been only a pile of rubble where one of the largest stadiums in American history once was.

The Silverdome was a really important venue in the early days of monster trucks and indoor motorsports shows. It can be argued that the first spectator car crush completed by monster trucks in history was held there in the early 1980s. Between that, the pulling, and all of the other stuff that went down over the decades, we’re sad to see the big fellah go.

Oh, and how does this get expensive for a contractor if the building does not fall down on its own? Imagine the expense in time and manpower that they will get soaked for if they have to use a wrecking ball and crane method! Somehow we think they are going to figure it out. Or Else.

I seem to remember(it\’s a foggy memory though), that back in the 70\’s or early 80\’s, they ran what were ASA type late models inside the Silverdome. As someone said then, it must have been like jet fighters in a pickle barrel. Too small and flat for much passing. It must have smelled like race gas heaven!

I’m sure that the inept Lions management and the Ford family were involved with this fiasco just like they are responsible for their crappy football team.

I’m not sure – we still haven’t accounted for where the MARTA bus that blocked the Georgia Dome implosion filming was at the time.

They should have flown in Millwall and Chelsea fans from the UK. They would have had the whole stadium reduced to rubble in 30 seconds to use as missiles to throw at each other…

I always knew that Mitch Ryder, the MC5, Iggy, Bob Seger, Kid Rock or M&M shoulda done a version of ‘I’m Still Standing’. Billy Joel? UUGH ! ! ! Kinda clever though, in light of the shitstorm the contractor is going through right now.

Yeah! The MC5 doing I’m Still Standing and dueling with their guitars – kick out the jams mofos indeed…..
