4.5 Tons Of Fun: The GMC Hummer EV Will Weigh A Reported 9,046lbs – Pretty Crazy

(By Tom Lohnes) – Electric cars are heavy. With all of their batteries, motors, and other things, EVs outweigh gas-powered vehicles by a lot. Batteries can make cars like the small Chevy Bolt weigh more than a C8 Corvette. Yikes. Now, what happens when you put all of those batteries into a much bigger vehicle, say a pickup truck? Weight. A lot of it. GM proves this with their Hummer EV.

According to a leak from GM themselves, the new GMC Hummer EV weighs 9,046 pounds. Yes, you saw that right, 4.5 tons of batteries and truck stuff, all bundled up into one package. This weight number is no short of concerning, because it’s out-beefs even the top-gun dually GMC Sierra, and it’s a half-ton. It really does amaze me how GMC can get this behemoth to 60 in 3 seconds flat, because they’re working with a lot.

Think of this, no midsize pickup is able to safely tow this Hummer. Would you trust anyone to tow this Porky EV? It doesn’t sound safe.

Never mind towing… how are you going to fish this out of a mud bog if you get in over your head (or door handles)? I suspect the Jeep owners with the tongue in cheek “H2 Recovery Team” decals are going to balk at pulling one of these out.

I see it going the way of the Avalanche, the Volt and the SSR. All hype, no performance…in an electric vehicle efficiency is part of the performance factor whether you like it or not. A 9,000lb brick can not be that efficient…physics.

EVs have no towing capacity for any sort of range. What EV tows a ton of weight? locomotives. And they have an EMD diesel there for a power source. When the railroads figure it out, so will the smaller vehicles.

Guaranteed to get you from home to the nearest walmart for a recharge to then make it to work . Then recharge at work all day to do the reverse .
