Chad’s going out of his mind right now. Remember he is the resident freak for antique “homes on wheels” around here but when this one popped up I figured I should be the one to post about it so he didn’t blow and o-ring and pass out on the keyboard. The person selling this rig down in Texas doesn’t know a whole lot about it and frankly neither do we. We have never seen another one, we don’t recognize the front sheet metal other than the grill, and other than the fact that the machine has a 390ci FE V8 in it, we’re kind of flying blind. We do believe that Homer Simpson himself penned the lithe design of the truck because who else could make something that looks like this on purpose?
Inside and out this 1958 Ford camper is in really good shape. The body isn’t all dinged and dented up, there is no overt sign of rust and once you get inside it does have the looks of a horror movie set but not because it is disgusting. It looks like a horror movie set because it is so old and neatly kept that some sort of psychopath had to have owned this thing. Is it possible that the RV actually dates from the 1970s and not the 1950s? Maybe it just had an interior update at some point but the insides of this thing scream 1970s with the avocado colored over, the flower pattern stuff on the walls, and the liberal use of brown color tones. The seat coverings seem to have a 1970s feel as well.
As mentioned the engine is a 390 and it is backed by a 3-speed manual transmission. That means gas mileage may be in the negative number range but it’ll get you where you want to go and not spit its guts out on the way. Overall this thing is pretty rad and we’d definitely call it BangShift approved. Is that RV television show still on the air where the guys remodel them? This thing with a modern remodel job, some EFI, a gear vendors, and a few other touches would be killer to cruise around.
Now…let me break the news of this thing to Chad gently.

The front end is a 50s-60s Ford Vanette, pretty cool rig!
The back end looks suspiciously like a Minnie Winnie motirhome we owned in the 70’s. I think thats why the two ends don’t match. Take one 50’s
Ford Delivery Van and cut away the body, then graft one 70’s motorhome body to it. Lot of work, but it looks well done! I’m pretty sure most all these had 6 cylinders from the factory, so some works been done there too! If it was located or built in Ca., I’d guess a clever way to save a good motorhome that wouldn’t pass smog anymore, but it looks like it was probably built long before Texas started even thinking about Smog Checks!
