This ain’t your lumbering old tractor video here, kids. Nope, this is way better than that. While I am not sure what year this Caterpillar 666 tractor is I can tell you that it is way faster than you think it is. Fast is a relative term, obviously but for what you are looking at here, 40+ mph is fast and that is exactly what this big animal is capable of doing in top gear. The Caterpillar 666 you see here started out as the primary power unit for a large scraper type tractor. You know the ones I am talking about. They are the huge beasts used to move mass quantities of dirt at job sites where lots of earth is being relocated. The 666 was the biggest in the world when it was introduced in 1962 having the ability to haul some 54 yards in the trailer (or “bowl”) that sat behind this unit. Interestingly the engine in the tractor you see here ranged anywhere from 450-550hp depending on when it was built and it was augmented by a pusher engine in the back which threw another 300-400 into the mix plus loads of torque.
Apparently this guy just bought the power unit to add to an equipment collection that includes other Caterpillar equipment. With a nine speed transmission, the top speed of this monster is a bona fide 42mph runner. It looks like a Blastolene creation or some other type of overgrown airport tractor or something. The guy hops in the Caterpillar 666, backs it off the trailer, bolts the ROPS roof on it and then quite literally hits the road. You really get the size perspective of the machine when its huge tires are spilling across into the next lane as he drives down the road. It looks like he was heading to an equipment show of some type. At points he seems to have a police escort and at other times it appears like it is just him. Passing through the small towns is equally hilarious. What a beast!
I know that I am a freak for this stuff, but you have to admit that this looks like a LOT of fun. He could have squashed half of those little cars and never known the difference.
Not been able to see it,
how can he drive the tractor on the roads without vehicle registration.. You would not get away with that in Oz
