6.38 Quarter, Naturally Aspirated!

6.38 Quarter, Naturally Aspirated!

Back when we were living at the old apartment we reported on Sonny Leonard’s newest and baddest ass engine. It was (and is) an 892ci monster that made 2,000 naturally aspirated horsepower on the dyno. Well, that motor has found its way into a car and has done some battle on the strip.

CompetitionPlus.com has reported that Top Sportsman competitor Frank Tamez is the owner of that motor and it resides in the front of his late-model GTO racer. During the PSCA (Pacific Street Car Association) finals at The Strip in Las Vegas the car went 6.38 without the aid of a turbo, supercharger, or nitrous.

Vegas is notorious for less than spectacular air so this thing has bunches more in it. Image a car running high 6.20s with just a pair of massive carbs on top. Neat.

The story says that Tamez’s car was built by Jerry Bickel and actually sports a Turbo 400 transmission. We want to know who built that sucker!

This is certainly a great opening shot for these mammoth motors from Sonny’s. You too could own one, assembled and dyno tested for 87,800 smackers. See Sonny’s web site.
