Abandoned Drag Strip History: Hot Rod Clubs and Tracks of Virginia

It seems like the awesome vintage drag racing photos and stories are pouring in
from all over the place lately. Our latest find is from a web site that’s an online exhibition of the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum of Ferrum College in Virginia. It’s called Full Throttle, and it tells the story of a number of hot rods clubs and of many drag strips that were open in the area from the 1950s until now.

There are a number of great pages on the site, plus some with very average hot rod information. Here are our favorites that we recommend visiting:

Click here to see historic photos of the now abandoned Roanoke Drag Strip.

Click here to see a list of 30 past and present tracks in and around Virginia.

Click here for an extensive list of Virgina car clubs then and now. A great feature of the car club page is that you can click on may of the names to see the club logos or plaques.

You can also start here to see a similar collection and story of historic oval tracks, including some ‘shine running!
