AutoTrader Classics Find: A 1990 Lamborghini LM002

AutoTrader Classics Find: A 1990 Lamborghini LM002

With only 301 examples produced over a seven year run, you may have never seen a Lamborghini LM002 SUV before. The good news is that once you lay eyes on one, even concentrated acid won’t wash the memory out. That being said, this truck was a performer that was truly unmatched in its day.

It was powered by a 5.1L V12 engine backed with a five-speed manual transmission and it rode on tires that were specifically designed for the truck. Lamborghini paid Pirelli to invent the “Scorpion” line of tires for this truck. Buyers could opt for a more road going tread or a design that was made specifically for running in the sand.

As you’d expect, wealthy people were the only ones to grab onto the LM002. Some sheiks and princes in oil rich countries were known to fly around the desert in them, and they could cover some ground considering that the fuel tank was capable of holding 76 gallons from the factory.

The totally bizarro looks of the truck are somewhat due to the fact that Lamborghini was marketing military versions to countries and styling was not high up on the list of importance, functionality was. As insane as it seems, a few countries bought the trucks in volume, with Libya being the largest purchaser, according to our research. Col. Gaddafi supposedly bought 100 of them for his army. We presume that purchase was made while wearing a snappy running suit as he has been known to sport.

As fugly as the truck is, we’d love to hammer the V12 and row the five gear on the dunes or in the mud. Sure, you’d have to sneak up on it to get it, but owning one of these really says, “I’m so freaking rich, I can drive something that appears to have been designed by a third grade classroom.”
