Bad Idea: Student Driver Wrecks Car During Lesson In Snow Storm, Instructor in Critical Condition

Sometimes you just have to shake your head at the decisions people make. A Haverhill, Massachusetts driving instructor, has been hospitalized in critical condition after a student he was instructing crashed the Toyota Camry she was driving into a snow plow during a lesson. That lesson was taking place in the middle of a three day show storm. Seriously.

The inexperienced driver, not shockingly, lost control of the car and crossed into oncoming traffic where a man driving a pickup truck equipped with a snow plow was traveling in the opposite direction. He received minor injuries, as did the student driver. The truck was not plowing the road at the time of the accident.

Driving in the snow is something that takes getting used to. We’ll readily admit to being a hazard to ourselves and potentially others the first winter we had our driver’s license because we had little to no understanding of vehicle dynamics and our only real “practice” was blowing donuts in the high school parking lot (which never gets old…trust us).

Yes, the young driver needs to learn snow driving, but in our opinion it should not be a live fire exercise. Head to a parking lot and experience what it feels like to skid, slip, slide, and lose the handle on the car at low speeds.

The state has now begun an investigation into the incident and we’re guessing that the driving school is going to find itself in some hot water over this whole thing.
