BANGshift Question Of The Day: If You Could Live In Your Shop, Or One Like This, Would You?

BANGshift Question Of The Day: If You Could Live In Your Shop, Or One Like This, Would You?

Warehomes, Barndominiums, Live Work Spaces, or Shouses, whatever you call them this might just be the ultimate way to live for car guys and gals. At least it would be for me. Daphne and I talked for years about moving into a warehouse and making it our warehome. It was our dream to have a nice place to sleep and relax but with all the car stuff right there as well. And most importantly with the ability to lock up and walk away from it without worrying about mowing the lawn or watering plants or whatever. In many parts of the country they call them barndominiums, but now we are also hearing them being called Shouses and some companies like EPS Buildings are making them a specialty. It just might be the best of both possible worlds. After all, some of the interiors on the EPS website are as fancy as anything you’ll find in any regular house, it is just connected to a giant shop space. It sounds beyond perfect to me.

But how about you? If your spousal unit would go for it, is living in a Shouse the ultimate living and playing space? Is a Shouse right for you?

I don’t think there is a gearhead alive that wouldn’t jump at the chance to live in one of these. Good luck winning over the Mrs. on the idea!

Have lived in a shop a couple times for short periods. Has it’s pluses an minuses. No f’n yard work and using the time for cars instead, would be a plus.

If the spousal unit is not a fellow gearhead sharing your enthusiasm for the hobby a couple things would need to be included in the design. Sound, smell and sights of the car building would not help your cause. As a person who lived in a duplex with the garage access from the kitchen, smelling carb cleaner when one is trying to cook is not helpful. Waking up to the sound of compressors, grinders and hammers would not go over well. Finally, a design that looks less like a warehouse and more like a home with a big roll up door. You may still need a bit of a yard to make the sale.

Have a huge live in shop sounds nice, but always thought a separate garage is better. Nothing emanating from the garage to the house & god forbid if any of the auto activities lead to a fire it won’t burn down the house.

I would have jumped at the opportunity a few years ago. Now though, I’d prefer to keep the two separate. Have maybe a 3-5 car garage at the house for the nice toys and a separate shop elsewhere for all the projects and storage.

Dumbest question ever asked no Bangshift. I’m a chronic contrarian, and even I can’t play devil’s advocate, here. Not yes, but hell yeah!!!

That would cost about 30 grand a year in tax where I live. But F’n a yes I would live there.

My current set-up is ideal for me though I wish I had a separate building to store the “completed” projects (we all know they’re never really done). A spot to keep the clean ones would be really nice.

I have a 1200 sq. ft. shop and if the clean ones could stay separately it would be perfect for an old guy like me.

The Shouse – at an earlier time in my life it would have been cool.

    Truly a dream home.

At least we have plenty of empty shops in abandoned industrial parks that could be converted into toy barns.

the possibilities are there if the zoning can be fix$ed.

This wife did agree to such and I love it! We call ours a carpartment, because we filled the garage space with cars and the living space is an apartment!

What, no indoor drag strip? At least a 330′ so you can test out your 60′ times late at night if you couldn’t get to sleep
