I’m always looking on Craigslist at projects and parts and “stuff” in general. Yesterday I was looking at a cheap GMC S15 pickup, trying to convince myself that I need a beater driver/shop truck, and started looking in earnest at what could be had for $1000 or less and could haul parts around. Mini pickup trucks are the standard go to in that regard, as are G-Body El Caminos and even some full size trucks if you find the right deal. But what’s the right pick? If you were buying a parts chaser, that didn’t have to be your tow rig or anything like that, what would you choose?
Here are some samples we found on our local Craigslist for inspiration.
The Houston truck market being what it is, there is not a single drivable truck with a title listed on craigslist for less than $1000. I just checked.
All those pictured are double that or more in the Indy area. Most won’t run, or you can see through.
Several months ago I bought a 71 F100 Sport Custom longbed for $700. The truck had rust in the typical places but nothing that cant be fixed pretty easily. It’s got a 360, automatic, power steering, power brakes, and factory AC! I found it on Craigslist about 45 mins from my home. “Bumpside” Ford truck prices are starting to go way up but some reasonable ones are still out there if you keep looking…..
Why is there no links to the adds? I would buy the C10 in an instant for 1k or less.

$500
I would take either the C-10, S-10, Ranger or the Tacoma.
Isuzu P’up Diesel or Rabbit Diesel pickup. Gets stupid good mileage & will run forever & no worries about the driver getting a speeding ticket.
C-10 or D100 all day, but I’d love to get a D50 or another Dodge Rampage.
When rummaging around in the bottom of the barrel, you’re best off just trying to go with whatever’s least rotten. Looks like $1000 MIGHT get an operational mini-truck in the Atlanta area.
