BangShift Daily Tune Up: Brand New Car – Mungo Jerry (1972)

Most people know the band Mungo Jerry from their campy hit “In The Summertime” but the group has a lot more to offer than just that one unique tune. This song from their 1972 album Boot Power is one of our favorite summer cruising tunes ever. The simple three minute rock song is called Brand New Car and it’ll have you head bobbing, foot tapping, and accelerator flattening when you load it onto your iPod. Ray Dorset is the lead singer and (we think) the only member of the original Mungo Jerry line up that is still with the band. He has one of those great soulful British voices that seemed to be growing on trees in the 1960s and 1970s. He really gets after it in this song and it sounds great. The dudes playing behind him are cool too, with lots of great blues riffs being jammed out in the song, too.

Hell, listening to this one will make you forget about In The Summertime. There’s nothing better than getting a new set of wheels on the road or a set of wheels that you’ve resurrected from the depths of automotive hell. This song conveys that world beating feeling very well. We’re not sure if he says the car has twin carbs or 10-carbs at one point, but hey…we’ll give him a little artistic freedom. The song is still great.
