BangShift Tune-Up: “Mean Man” By W.A.S.P. (1989)

BangShift Tune-Up: “Mean Man” By W.A.S.P. (1989)

No joke, hearing this song just before I wrote this piece was my introduction to W.A.S.P. And that’s a miracle, seeing how I managed to get through my teenage years without hearing a rock song with the extended title like “Animal” or “Rebel in the F.D.G” has. For all I know, I might have heard my mother playing something like this when I was younger…she spent quite a bit of time trying to look like Blackie Lawless, according to older pictures that I’ve seen.

The music though…the music is the hook here. In 1989 I was fully immersed in rock music, thanks to the mean age of the household I was living in remaining firmly under 35. My grandfather listened to easy listening and jazz-style instrumental stuff, and everybody else was into all sorts of rock music. At any given moment, you’d hear Twisted Sister, Van Halen or Poison blasting from one of the downstairs rooms, where the youngest members of the “adults” lived. Hair metal on the whole…meh. Poison only registered because they looked like they were having the time of their lives (ah, blissful youthful ignorance) and bands like Cinderella and Kix did absolutely nothing for me. In hindsight, maybe it was best that I learned about this band thirty years later…my dumb ass would’ve been singing it out loud just within earshot of my mother.

The actual music video for this song…well, it pales to the Mad Max police chase, so I went  with that instead. Enjoy!

LANGUAGE WARNING: Explicit content. Mind the young ears, they might repeat it!

WASP, awesome band. Seen them quite a few times back in the 80s and 90s. Great live show!!!

Saw ’em in ’84, where people thought they were a joke, and lived in the same area where I might catch Chris fetching Lita a Tommy-Burger…never thought they’d last but they sure did, shows what I know…

I remember that idiot Tipper Gore going after Blackie Lawless over his music and Dee Snider of Twisted Sister putting those senators in there place during the hearing about music censorship. Yes, I still enjoy listening to ’80’s Metal.

Great tune! Ridiculous video (haha). Long live hair metal! I’m 60 and I still listen to these bands everyday.
