Camaro Will Outsell Mustang in 2010, 5-600hp Z28 on Tap for 2012

When the 2010 chapter of the pony car book is written, Chevrolet will be crowned the victor of the round. The Camaro is on pace to outsell the Mustang by about 7,000 units through the end of the year if sales trends remain the same. Even a late inning rally by Ford won’t be enough to take the lead back.

With 75,685 Camaros sold through November and 68,264 Mustangs, both cars have had decent sales years. The V6 Mustang which offers 300hp and more than 30mpg helped to close the gap a little, but wasn’t enough to turn the tide. For 2011, Ford will be rolling out a slate of new engine options and Chevy will be dropping the Camaro convertible onto the market, so each company has an ace up their sleeve.

The biggest news from the BangShift perspective, was the confirmation that a Z28 Camaro is on the way for 2012. The engine will be rated between 500 and 600hp according to sources inside of General Motors and it will displace 6.2L. This is cool news on multiple levels. The Z28 was thought to be dead when the General slid under the financial waves and the government took over. It seemed that any hope of cool stuff was snuffed out. It wasn’t snuffed, just shelved.

There has been no mention made about the availability of the Z28 in terms of production numbers, but we think that Chevy would be crazy to limit themselves when the Boss Mustang, also slated for 2012 will be available to anyone who has $40,000 to throw at it.

We can’t wait for those shootouts to begin!
