Grand LS Swap: This 1977 Pontiac Grand LeMans Wagon Is Ready To Rip

Grand LS Swap: This 1977 Pontiac Grand LeMans Wagon Is Ready To Rip

An older GM station wagon and the undeniable power potential of the LS engine. Argue with me all you care to about how it’s sacrilegious or how it’s otherwise some kind of affront to humanity, but as far as I’m concerned it’s a match made in heaven, especially if the wagon falls under the Malaise banner. I’m not saying that a 427-powered Kingswood wagon is a good swap candidate…on the contrary, if you find one that is still in one piece with it’s engine intact, leave it alone. But if you find a mid-1970s longroof that is still being huffed around by whatever wheezebox it left the factory with, do yourself a favor and take a look at this for inspiration.

The baseline for our judgement continues to be “Shaken and Stirred”, the 1989 Pontiac Safari that Three Pedals beats on mercilessly every time we see them. As someone who has actually driven that machine, I promise you, it’s good. So good, in fact, that the only knock I can even toss the car is that it looks too much like the Caprice it’s based upon. GM isn’t too good about disguising platform sharing, are they? But one look at this 1977 Grand LeMans and…well, ok, it’s still Colonnade-era A-platform car, but at least you still had the peaked prow hoodline that Pontiac was running, and someone went to the trouble of fitting the snowflake wheels that look ideal here.

Same body as the Holley Chevelle wagon, and so cool that it got those wheels..fit perfectly.

In a semi-interesting twist, (probably only to me), I just sold my 1977 Lemans Safari wagon two days ago. Same color, 400 Pontiac engine, 4 barrel, but no wood trim. Mine had cosmetic, (departing poly coat), and organic, (rusty quarters), opportunities for improvement, but that car was ridiculously reliable and so much fun to drive. The car for sale here is how I originally envisioned mine going, but I just never got down to putting the plan into action. The seller has nailed the combination, IMO. Not overboard, just the right mix of parts. Knowing what it takes to do an LS style swap and how the price of “incidentals” cause budget creep, I believe $10,000 is a bargain for that car. Anyone buying that is going to love the power and the handling. Lastly, of all of the performance/muscle cars I’ve owned, none of them drew the attention or had people come up and want to talk about the vehicle as much as that wagon did. Favourite comment; “we had one EXACTLY like this, except it was a Dodge”.
