Handbuilt, You Say: The Real Story On That Blue Knockout Based On A 1984 Pontiac Firebird!

Handbuilt, You Say: The Real Story On That Blue Knockout Based On A 1984 Pontiac Firebird!

Last year’s top-pick Craigslist find for me was this…well, thing. All we knew was that it was based on a 1984 Pontiac Firebird and that it looked like something straight from a video game that didn’t want to pay for the privilege of using a real car in the scene. We know what a 1984 Firebird looks like, and this car didn’t look like it. There were flavors of AMC, Ford Australia and Chrysler all over the outside, while inside we did spot the Chevrolet Caprice-sourced cluster and the gearshift, which I initially thought was sourced from a Lincoln Mark VIII. I was close with that guess, I’m happy to say.

But what was this thing? How did we go from Firebird to fully unhinged and somehow dead-nuts gorgeous in the same shot? Many have asked since the story first ran about what kind of kit this is, and the truth was we didn’t know anything about the origin story of the car. Well, a contributor to Hemmings Motor News has turned up the story on how the car was hand-built by Dmitry and Arkady Khudobin, who immigrated in from Ukraine and wanted to build a kit based on third-gen F-bodies that would echo their favorite themes from the musclecar era. That plan fell through, but their minds certainly were in the right place when they finished this car. Check out the story by following the link below.

These brothets have amazing talent. I can’t believe this started as a firebird. Too bad they didn’t make more of them.
