Because NASCAR? This Pontiac Grand Prix Packs Two Homologation Specials Into One!

The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona and the 1986 Pontiac 2+2 actually have quite a bit in common. Think about it…both are factory homologation specials designed to whip up on NASCAR tracks. Both favored aero designs compared to the standard vehicle that they were based on, both were successful race cars in their respective times, and both have more than a little input from Richard Petty. The differences lie in the generations in which they were born: for street duty, the Daytona wins hands-down with a “base” 440 powerplant, a four-speed, and the bones of the Mopar B-body underpinning things. Nothing against the GM G-body, but the Grand Prix is the most avoided version of that platform (ok, with exception of the slantback Oldsmobiles and Buicks) and the 2+2 was so gutless that even MotorWeek took shots at them during their review of the hot G-bodies. Not good.

With that bit of trivial information out of the way, let’s take a look at this 1984 Grand Prix. It started life as a standard fare GP, so there’s no funky tunnel window or shrunken trunk out back. The 2+2 nose is here, though, and that isn’t a bad thing. But even if you don’t like the nose cone, something tells me that it isn’t the most controversial addition to the car.

Fitted out back is a no-kidding Aero Warrior spoiler, claimed to be off of a real-deal 1969 Daytona. If that’s the case, we know more than a few Mopar fanatics who will get their torches and pitchforks ready. At least the horsepower issue has had some addressing…the corporate 305 was ditched in favor of a Chevrolet 350 and built TH350 combo that is pushing power out to the 7.5-inch rear axle.

A phantom Grand Prix SJ with the 2+2’s nose and ducktail spoiler would be cool, but having a monster Mopar rear wing on the back? We will leave it at this: we can’t wait to read the comments…

This person is confused. It has the aero nose and wing for stock cars but puts on drag racing rims. Those mopar fanatics with the torches and pitchforks should rip off that wing and install it on the correct car.

That’s the sound of me blowing chunks at the sight of this pile of shit…

The front end reminds me of the look I get when I’ve just bitten off a large piece of food and the phone rings.

Remove Wing. On the Dodge or Plymouth that wing mounts on the quarter panel. On that GP it is mounted to the Deck Lid. Note the Deck lid is not level in the rear? It looks to be further up. Meaning the lid is twisting from the force, or weight.

The wing has no business on that car, makes it look like a Honda boi’s version of a GM. “Now that I added 75 HP I need a wing so I can drift ‘yo!”

The comments are a little harsh.

The car actually needs to be more radical. Those wings are reproduced, so adding one to non-Mopar isn’t a big deal.

More rake, much more rubber, more hood, an aero back, wilder paint … And a lot more power would make this Poncho a bitchin street freak.

    That “Wing”, Looks Extremely Terrible!…
This Is A Crime, Against Pontiac!…
