The Buick Grand National has come into it’s own as an iconic car. The turbocharged V6 was decent for the time stock, but if you knew your way around a turbocharged engine, you were a god on the street, often scaring the old-school muscle cars. And in all-black, the otherwise nice and plush Regal became something more. Something evil. It didn’t sound like a performance car, but it sure ran like one. Grand Nationals are ten thousand dollars all day long on Craigslist, with plenty going well above that. So if you’ve got five grand, do you have any hope of snagging one of Buick’s turbocharged wonder coupes, or are you just flat out of luck?
C’mon…we wouldn’t do you like that. We will say that there will be some work involved on your part, but how about a 1984 GN that needs some finishing touches and some engine work for $2,850. You aren’t getting a show-quality car for that kind of money…let’s get that out of the way now. In fact, our current mark doesn’t run. Claimed to be a barn-find, everything is there, but it will need some finishing touches. The interior will need to be cleaned up and the seats need to be recovered. The body has primer spots where work has been on-going, and it will need another coat of black paint to finish up the deal. But it is on all four tires, it doesn’t look wrecked from the pictures, and you have a couple of grand left over that can at least get the 3.8L up and going. If you’re insisting on starting with a legend for a first car, a Grand National isn’t a bad way to go.
non-injected model, had issues when built, still cheap enough to take a swing at
Sorry but it was injected, but wasn’t intercooled but that doesn’t mean much now days several I’ve seen have v-8 turbos in them now.Miss my 87 that i had that would run high 11’s in street trim, street tires and 22lbs of boost with a te44 turbo.
Always liked the Grand National Styling anyway. Seems like the perfect car to put the LS that I have just sitting in a corner in.
Sasquatch, you’re a bastard…. why do you tempt me with these things?
Too bad it’s on the wrong coast, that would be a sweet ride to fix up.
