FAKE Oil Claims: The “Lubricity” Test Problem. Do These “Tests” Prove Anything, Or Are They Just For Show On Commercials?

While this testing device has been around for a very long time, it became really popular in the 1980’s when some major oil and additive companies used the results in TV commercials to make claims as to how good their products were. Back then I remember hearing that there was no real science behind it, but didn’t pay much attention. Later in life, while working with some oil companies, I found out they still used them for some minor testing. But none of them used it for real scientific data.

So is there any good reason to do this testing at all?
