Money No Object: Two Fox-Body Specials In One Convertible – A 1985 Ford Mustang Twister II Predator G.T. 302!

Okay, four-eye Fox fans, have we got a doozy for you today. The bottom end of the Fox-body market is the dirt-cheap Craigslist find that can be scored for under a grand and built into something radical, right? What’s the high end, then? The 1980-81 Cobras with the wild graphics and absolutely no grunt whatsoever? The 1979 Indy Pace Car with the turbocharged 2.3L four? The SVO cars? The 1993 Cobra? Okay, in fairness the last of the Foxes might take the cake for a from-the-factory offering, but what about the specialty outlets? Shelby might have been busy with Dodge in the 1980s but that doesn’t mean there weren’t a whole line of companies waiting to work some magic on the Mustang. One would be enough, but this convertible has had two different groups work it over…

First off, you might be asking what a “Twister II” Mustang is. In 1970, the Kansas City District Sales office took 100 Mach 1 Mustangs, asked that they be fitted with 428 Super Cobra Jet engines and painted Grabber Orange. In reality, half got the 351 four-barrel, but all got a special stripe package with a “tornado with eyes” logo on the haunches. For 1985, the sales district again worked to get a special model for their market. This time, 90 GT-spec Mustangs were fitted with a bronze dash plate, a press kit from Ford explaining what the stripes were about, and an alabaster coaster with the running horse logo. After that, they were basic Mustang GTs, and as such all options applied. Out of the Twister II lot, nine were five-speed convertibles.

This Twister is just a touch more special that the other eight, we’re guessing. We’ve done a full review on what Solomon American did to create the Predator G.T. 302 specification for Fox Mustangs, which you can read HERE, but to sum it up, a man named Tom Solomon was hell-bent on turning Fox Mustangs into cars that truly could run with their older, more respected brethren. Solomon offered up a huge array of modifications that could go from basic wheels to an out-and-out built 302, gears, body braces and all of the other good bits. How much hotter could a Predator G.T. 302 be? That’s up to whoever paid for whatever modifications. Judging from this example, someone knew exactly what they were doing and created a nest egg to cash in on.

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

    Stunning!

Everything works on this car and the minilte wheels are a tribute to the Bud Moore cars that triumphed in Trans Am. Unfortunately I haven’t even got the money to drink my hangover off so I’ll just have to make do with looking at the pictures…
