Goes Like Hell, Indeed: The 9-Second Dodge Omni GLH From Drag Week 2015!

Goes Like Hell, Indeed: The 9-Second Dodge Omni GLH From Drag Week 2015!

Alright, I’ll hang my head in shame: I watched roughly five minutes of all of the Drag Week footage. Yes, we had it covered every day, and yes, there was plenty of information floating around, but in the end I only saw five minutes of footage, but I saw one race that made my day: I got to watch the live feed as Jim Reeves hustled his 1986 Dodge Omni GLH down the track to break into the 9-second range.

The Omni GLH program was a Carroll Shelby project. Literally meaning “Goes Like Hell”, the featherweight L-body was treated to the 2.2L Turbo 1 engine, which in 1986 would be cranking out about 146 horsepower…not bad in a car that could weigh in as little as 2,200 pounds. In Reeves’ car, a well-boosted 2.5L four-cylinder sourced from a minivan punishes the A-555 five-speed transaxle when the power goes down. It sounds like a herd of pissed-off hornets, spews fire, looks about as sinister as any Omni could ever look, and stayed together for all of Drag Week. Well, most of it did, anyways…

The little bit of Drag Week I watched included that GLH. Ha. A GLH was my first new car. He even had the factory fog light covers and and GLH stickers intact. Very cool I wasn’t the only one that appreciated it.
