Rough Start: Handy With A Paint Gun? Then This 1979 Chrysler 300 Is For You!

Rough Start: Handy With A Paint Gun? Then This 1979 Chrysler 300 Is For You!

First off, I want to extend a huge thanks to everybody who sent me the link to this car. I’ve been successfully pinned down: a 1979 Chrysler 300 that is rough in all of the right ways in Colorado Springs, Colorado for less than half of the Rough Start budget. In fact, I’m almost certain I’ve seen this exact car before as I’ve bombed around the Cimarron Hills neighborhood. So let’s take a closer look at why this top-tier Cordoba would make for an excellent first project, shall we?

The basics are all there: It’s a B-body Mopar, so parts are plentiful and there is a great aftermarket for support. Underhood is the E-58 360, 727 automatic, and 9.25 rear axle…not a bad combination to work with, but if you absolutely must, a Chrysler big-block will fit with just about no issue whatsoever. The body…well, not much you can do to it, but looking at the other offerings from Chrysler Corporation between 1975-1980, it isn’t difficult to see why the Cordoba was the sales leader. It’s comfortable inside, has a trunk that comes with a body capacity load diagram, and this particular one carries the 300 trim level, which got you a tachometer and floor shifter.

Along the way the stock wheels were ditched for Mopar Police wheels with the proper drilled caps, but otherwise, it just looks like bodywork was started and not completed. It looks to be in great driver condition, so you could take some of the money you didn’t spend out of that $5,000 budget and get this car painted. Color could be up to you, but may we suggest any other color besides Spinnaker White? We’ve seen one painted TX9 Black, and it looks much better…and bonus, the red interior will still go with it. You can’t ignore the price, so buy it…I already have one derelict Mopar to put back together.

Forget the paint gun, spray bomb that thing in black primer. If budget allowed, I’d then stick a 6-71 blower through the hood for a Mopar equivalent of T-bird’s ride from the Crow.

I’d rather have a K- car than one of these pigs. To put the “300” brand on one of these beasts…sacrilege.
