Long-Roof Rarity: This 1972 AMC Ambassador SST Would Make A Neat Fall Cruiser

Long-Roof Rarity: This 1972 AMC Ambassador SST Would Make A Neat Fall Cruiser

If you are sitting here reading this, chances are good that you aren’t at the 2017 LS Fest in Bowling Green. I will be, and like past years, I’ll be looking at every possible vehicle that GM’s venerable late-model block can be jammed into. Since you’re going to have a bowtie overload for a few days, I wanted to find a car from a brand that I highly doubt I’ll see over the course of the weekend. And that’s a tall order…besides the fleet of Chevy-swapped Mustangs that will be present, we’ve seen drift-spec Nissans and BMWs, old International pickup trucks sitting on Trailblazer SS frames, the blown Mercury Cougar that I still get hate mail for, and yes, even Mopar products.

One brand that I doubt I’ll see is an AMC product. I know LS-swapped Kenosha-built bodies exist, but compared to Fox Mustangs, they are rare. But I didn’t want LS-swapped. I wanted all-original American Motors, something that doesn’t normally hit the radar, something that would be neat to take out onto country roads as the weather finally takes a turn for the cooler in the country and the leaves start their annual show. And here I found the best mix between classic, rare, and unique (without being weird) I could come up with: a low-mile, 360-powered 1972 AMC Ambassador SST station wagon. There’s nothing heavily modified…it’s just a Grasshopper Green wagon that has been taken care of for forty-some years that will start at the first hit of the key and move on. The seller has become a parent, and the AMC has to go to make room for another wagon with improved safety features.

Their loss, your gain. These Ambassadors are built like battleships and are nice and quiet inside. If you have a long-roof itch to scratch, take a moment and consider a car that somehow didn’t get driven through the ground like so many before it.
