Modern diesel technology is truly wonderful…great horsepower figures, torque ratings that could slow the Earth’s rotation, and all accomplished without spewing more smoke than a tire yard fire. Unfortunately, this wonderful technology is usually wrapped up in a pavement princess truck that is much more show than go, and work isn’t even in the equation. It’s not for a lack of great platforms to choose from, however, so for this Would You Rather, we went searching the state of Wyoming to see if we could some high-desert big trucks that would be excellent candidates for a modern diesel buildup. We used the same search parameters that we do for the Rough Start hunting ($5,000 budget, by owner only, with pictures) and limited the search field to 1980 and older only. Wyoming was chosen because of the high-desert, fairly dry climate…rust isn’t that big of an issue in pretty much the entire state. We came up with two optimal selections for building a killer work rig, but which one you’d choose is what we want to know. Take a look at the options below, then leave a comment letting us know your decision!
2. 1952 GMC five-window 1.5 ton
The F 800 would make a great ramp truck or maybe put a roll off bed on it. I would use a 6.7 power stroke and a 6r140 automatic
I’d take them both to the crusher.
By the time you’re through, you’ll have as much or more $ than a late model rig with all the modern conveniences (and none of the aggravation of a 50 year old rust bucket) and you still will not be able to insure it for value.
The End.
You are on the wrong site buddy
I am all in on the F800 with a 2017 6.7 6R140 combo. Chomping at the bit to do some type of 6.7 swap . .
