Road Trip Gold: Chevy Spotting In Small Town America

Road Trip Gold: Chevy Spotting In Small Town America

(Words and photos by Greg Rourke) – I love a good road trip. I’ve been known to drive 200 miles for a good steak. I once drove 300 miles to photograph a field of old trucks. I recently had a few short trips for no particular reason and found a couple hunks of vintage iron that need some love.

First gem I ran into was a 67 Chevelle that may or may not be a real SS396. It has the emblems and hood, but the 12 bolt was gone, as was the engine. It may have been a 4 speed car originally, as  my amateur archaeologist eye spotted “67 Chevelle” in yellow paint marker on the automatic steering column and only two pedals. Did someone grab the three pedals and steering column when the 12 bolt rear was pirated?  A peek underneath revealed a very rusty frame, and a walk around showed lots of filler and amateur rust patches. Still, we’ve seen worse cars brought back.
Next we have a 55 Chevy sedan delivery. I’m no expert in shoebox Chevys, or anything else for that matter, but the one piece lift tailgate seems to separate from a two door wagon that had the windows filled. It was last on the road in Illinois in 1986 and seems very restorable. The missing parts should be easily sourced.
Wasn’t looking for these, but that seems to be when they come out of the woodwork.
