Compulink Successfully Tests Four-Lane Timing System for ZMax

The last possible hurdle in running a four-lane drag race has been overcome as Compulink Timing Systems has successfully tested its first four-lane dragstrip timer at the only four-lane dragstrip in the world, zMax Dragway, in Concord, North Carolina.

Pinks All Out will be running a four-lane event there over the summer. This will be the first four-lane race in decades and it will be the first-ever televised one.

It’ll make for good TV.

Here’s the release from Compulink:

CONCORD, N.C. — CompuLink Timing Systems, zMax Dragway and the “Pinks All Out” TV show announced a successful test of a custom timing system for four-abreast racing today (April 22). The newly-developed timing system will be used at an upcoming Pinks event at zMax Dragway.

CompuLink founder Bob Brockmeyer described the unique system as “Two of our timing systems, crammed into one computer.” and sounded amazed when he added, “And it actually works!”

The one-of-a-kind system combines the hardware from two standard CompuLink drag racing timing systems with custom software to permit timing four-abreast racing and determine one winner. The system indicates the winning lane number on the left-hand scoreboard if the winner is in lane 1 or 2, or the right-hand scoreboard if in lane 3 or 4.
According to Brockmeyer, though four-abreast racing was occasionally tried during the drag racing’s “glory days,” this will be the first known instance of four-wide drag racing using an electronic timing system to stage the cars, start the race, and determine the winners.
