We like that our own kiddos run around with Cozy Coupes, but in the 1950s and ’60s, it was commonplace for hot rodding toddlers and pre-teens to race around in Quarter Midgets. There’s even a 1958 cover of Hot Rod magazine that shows a bunch of kids loaded up and ready to race these advanced go-karts. We were pretty impressed to find one of these little cars on Craigslist recently.
The car in the ad we found is a Kurts-Kraft, made by the same Glendale, California, shop that produced real Indy racing roadsters and the Kurtis sports cars under owner Frank Kurtis. According to the Wikipedia page, the company made about 550 ready-made midget racers and 600 kits.
This one is $6,000, so it won’t be replacing the little BangShifters’ Cozy Coupes any time soon.
Look at this site that shows photos of many of the other QMs that were sold back then.
