For Sale: The Greatest Car Hauler Of All Time….Just A Touch Over A Million Bucks

For Sale: The Greatest Car Hauler Of All Time….Just A Touch Over A Million Bucks

When you take one of the most rare and iconic custom trucks of all time and turn it into a car hauler, then ask over a million bucks for it, you’ve got the greatest car hauler of all time. First, let’s dial down the rage that many of you will spew when you see that an amazing GM Futurliner has been cut up and made into a massive ramp truck. This was a truck that had apparently been pillaged of tons of parts and used for the restoration of another Futurliner several years ago. The current seller started working with what was left and came up with the concept to make it into a massive flatbed hauler. We think that the truck is stunning and love that he kept the original (and apparently highly uncomfortable) cab up there in the front. The dude apparently made the thing tilt nose, which is way cool because the original trucks certainly were not.

The guys over at Hemmings caught up with the seller and got the scoop on the truck. He has upgraded it with a big Cummins diesel to replace the gas sixer and also swapped in an Allison automatic transmission as well so the truck certainly has the juice to drag whatever it wants to down the road. As you will see, it has had some pretty heavy loads on its back including vintage school buses and other stuff, so this is a truck that you can use (so long as you can apparently tolerate the cab).

The rear sections swing out on hinges and a center ramp lowers so whatever vehicle you have on the truck can be backed right off. There was an exceptional amount of work and thought put into this truck so the million dollar price tag, while completely nuts, isn’t unexpected. There were less than a dozen Futurliners ever built and we think that seven of them are actually known to exist today. One of them is overseas in a Nordic country and a few years back another ‘liner caught something like four million dollars at auction. It was since resold at a lower price, but still, these things are exceptionally rare.

We don’t have the million but if we access to had three bucks more than the sale price we’d buy this truck and suck down three burgers of the Mickey D’s dollar menu. That’s a fact jack.

I guess I should have done a better job explaining that the truck he started with was completely revenged for parts by guys restoring another ‘Liner. He started with less than a carcass and made of it what he could.

You can’t make everyone happy all the time… probably, it’s like the grain trucks, it was gonna rust into a pile anyways… how many beerholders does it have? Where is the dancer pole? Keg? Open Bar?

aw hell, at least it’s getting driven so people who would never have known about anything like it get to see it. 🙂

Looks like GM was smart and put a roof escape hatch on the cab in case the tall truck ended up on it’s side. The way the doors work on this thing, it’s probably a good thing. That cab and it’s modern looking conversion van seating looks pretty comfy to me.

But, I think this guy is reaching for the stars for his price tag. The last Futureliner that sold at auction didn’t bring those kind of bucks.

One of these sat for years in Sherman oaks California where I grew up. I always thought it was so cool but did not know how rare they were. Eventually they had it painted and they must have sold it or moved away.

errrr, conflicted. If it was gutted why not make it into an enclosed hauler with a sleeper? Ramp trucks and high end hauls don’t go hand in hand. The big buck guys go enclosed.

Reminds me of when a guy finds a carcass of a Corvette and makes a drag car out of it. Then all the Vette people scream about how he ruined it, after they all passed it over as unrestorable. Rod Saboury comes to mind.

Cool looking rig to me. I’d drive it and wouldn’t care about the haters. Most of the people hating on it wouldn’t know what it was if they weren’t told. I however wouldn’t pay that kind of money for it if I were fortunate enough to have that kind of money to spend.

Awesome centerpiece for a car collector. Maybe Mr Hendricks should buy it. Of course he has several center pieces already.

If I had a million bucks to spend on cars I’d be buying me a Viper. Then use the other S900,000 to pay the insurance for a couple of years.

Click on the link to see the truck’s before pics. The body looked rough, but intact. Totally savable. I would’ve have built an enclosed type. But, maybe the roof structure and body wouldn’t support a big rear door and ramp for car egress.

Shorten that hideous and dare I say… dangerous… overhang out back and I’m a big fan. I’m a little torn about the fact it wasn’t restored but then again it takes a brave man and a hot rodder to cut up historical cars now doesn’t it?

It might…just might, get on my “like to have” list if I win powerball, But for now I’ll just enjoy the novelty of it from afar

I wonder if it even has the original frame under it. Wasn’t the futureliner like a bus with the power pack in the rear? If so, it looks like he took the carcass of the cab and grafted it onto a modern truck frame… That rear overhang does look a bit problematic. Maybe the buyer can spend a quarter mil to have a hydraulic ramp that shifts forward once it is loaded and as it is being raised. Just a thought…
