(Photos by Mike Westfall) – Steamtown USA, located in Scranton, Pennsylvania is one of the finest collection of vintage steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, railroad history, and cool mechanical stuff that exists in America today. Recently, BangShifter Mike Westfall went there and he sent us more than 150 photos of the grounds. At over 60 acres, it is a sprawling complex but the space gets used because this place is dedicated to some of the biggest and most powerful vehicles in the world, railroad engines. One of our favorite all time behemoths, a Union Pacific “Big Boy” can be found here, along with literally dozens of other engines that ran during the golden age of steam power. The place has a turn table, several storage sheds for engines and a queue of equipment getting ready for restoration.
We love these things because they’re 100% mechanical. Not electronics, no computers, just valves, handles, fire, steam, soot, drive wheels the height of an average man and connecting rods that weigh hundreds of pounds a piece. What’s not to love?! Mike had a great time and said that the place is a must see for any gearhead with an appreciation of fascination with trains. Make sure you check out the cut away steam engine, huge diesel engine, and various trains in this gallery.
