SCTA World Finals Cancelled Due To Wet Conditions On Bonneville Salt Flats

SCTA World Finals Cancelled Due To Wet Conditions On Bonneville Salt Flats

Our last flicker of hope at seeing some great racing on the salt this year has been extinguished with the announcement that the SCTA World Finals have been cancelled due to wet conditions on the salt. Rain has been “persistent” in the area meaning that it has hit the salt a couple of times now in the last few months, never really giving the place much of a chance to dry all the way out. Another storm came through late last week and the SCTA advanced crew who was on the salt already preparing for the meet noted that the latest round of rain was significant enough and the drying process has been slow enough that the place will not be race ready by the time the SCTA World Finals are supposed to start.

While this news surely is a downer, we’re glad to see that SCTA made the call and lots of racers were spared the significant expense of driving all the way to the salt only to have the event cancelled. This was the case at Speed Week, but the reality was the odds of getting that one in were looking decent until we got blasted a couple times by pop up storms that seem to have been laser guided for the race course. Like the old saying goes, “Mother Nature giveth and Mother Nature taketh away.” This year, outside of some of the “middle meets” there wasn’t a whole lot happening out there on the great white dyno. We’ll all remember the 100th year of racing on the salt….because most of us didn’t see any racing on the salt!

Here’s the word straight from SCTA –

Speed Week at World Finals Update:

From your SCTA advance crew at 7:30 PM Sunday it’s raining now. Speed Week at World Finals at the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats has been cancelled. The advance crew consisting of SCTA President Scott Andrews and Race Director Bill Lattin have reviewed the BSF race courses and determined that they are too wet to have any reasonable expectation of them being dry enough to provide a quality race course. We owe our competitors and fans the most accurate assessment and a real picture of the current and expected conditions. The SCTA wishes to thank all of our loyal racers, sponsors, volunteers, and wonderful fans for your undying support of the SCTA and the Bonneville Salt Flats. The entire SCTA and BNI Boards have worked tirelessly to give you the best Land Speed Racing experience and anything less than that is not acceptable to us. We look forward to being your racing choice next year, but for this year at Bonneville Mother Nature hold’s the records. See you on the salt in 2015!

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR ON THE SALT!

What a year ! Truth be known the weather prognosicators have been predicting a much cooler and wetter summer for the greater Rocky Mt and surrounding regions since January . But damn it ! Why’d they have to be right THIS time when 90% of the time they’re dead wrong ? *

    * Weatherman/Meteorologist being the only job where you can get paid $100k plus a year to be wrong all the tim
