(Words and photos by Bob Chiluk) –  Don’t hate on me just yet! I had an absolute blast at this show. The cars were awesome, the people were awesome, and the food was awesome! So often treated as the ignored step children by other segments of the automotive culture, lowriders deserve a lot more respect than they got from most car guys. These things are intricate and built with the same levels of love and skill that the finest hot rods in the country are built with.

Do yourself a favor and immerse your self at one of their events and I will guarantee you will walk away with a greater appreciation for the group of CAR people you usually dont hang with. The Chicago Urban Art Society put on this event to preserve the lowrider culture that includes not only the cars, but the family aspect, traditional foods, and even the music of the lowrider scene. Close to twenty clubs were represented in the event that became filled to capacity and many had to be turned away be cause of lack of space in a Chicago south side industrial area called the Pilsen Corridor. Droves of people poured in on a picture perfect day to admire the rolling works of art.

There are segments of the car hobby filled with true craftsmen and fabricators that turn out gorgeous machinery. There are engineers that provide automotive solutions. There are problem solvers and innovators to automotive issues. These cats are all that and add artist to that list. True artisans to the extent that the attention to details and paint that will blow you away. Look at the unbelievable paint schemes that share a close similarity to 1960’s drag boats and jet boats. Layers of deep candies, and eye popping metal flake, not to mention intricate murals as well. Fit, finish, and detail that rival any European car you find out there. Sure it may not be your regular cup of tea, but check em out and expand your horizons a little!
