Friday Excuse to Go Home Early and Drink: GM Importing Chinese Cars

In a move that could be today’s equivalent to Benedict Arnold’s treasonous work with the British army during the Revolutionary War, GM has announced that, as part of its turnaround plan, it will begin importing cars from red China in 2011.

The plan starts at 17,335 cars in 2011 and advances to 51,546 by 2014. What’s been totally under-reported is that this is small potatoes compared to the other import sources of Mexico and Korea. That’s right, folks, Mexican-built imports will go from 317,763 in 2010 to a massive 501,316 in 2014. The third country in this trifecta of tragedy is Korea, which will benefit greatly by going from 36,967 in 2010 to 157,126 by 2014.

Feel free to swear out loud.

It’s like we’re living in bizarre world. We’re funneling tax money into a company that is openly promising to move more and more of its production to foreign countries! Is
everyone taking crazy pills?

The nefarious part of this whole thing is that these plans have been in the works for years. With specific import numbers being bandied about, this didn’t just pop into Fritz Henderson’s head the other day as a good idea. Nope, this project has been getting ironed out for a long time.

The gas bags in the PR department decided to slide this tid-bit out there when the torrent of horrible news ran out on Tuesday, so it would be buried among the rest of the offal.
We’d normally tell you not to drink when you’re angry, but this is such frustrating news, you’ve got no choice. We’re outta here, we’ve got cans to crush on our heads.

Here’s a parting gift, two stories about this disaster of an idea. If they plan on following through with this, we have really big issues with taxpayer money funding it.
