Gearhead Destination: Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry

Located in Chicago, Illinois, the Museum of Science and Industry is a wondrous place that any wide-minded gearhead would love. Featuring exhibits like an actual German U-Boat captured during WWII, the world’s first Streamliner Locomotive, and a modicum of airplanes and other equipment, this is a must-see.

The museum has been open since 1933 and has been drawing large curious crowds ever since.

Among the neater exhibits aside from the stuff we’ve already mentioned are a fullsized Boeing 727 that recreates a flight from Chicago to San Francisco and the 999 Empire Express steam locomotive (shown).

There are enough old war birds to send any aviation lover into low Earth orbit as well.

Sure, Chicago is a freezing cold iceberg at this time of year, but we bet hotel rooms are cheap and once you walk in the museum, you’ll at least be spending the day, and possibly more before you’re ready to call it quits.

See the museum’s web site here.
