GM Halts Camaro ZL1 Production Due to “Quality Assessment”

GM Halts Camaro ZL1 Production Due to “Quality Assessment”

Chevrolet has stopped production and reportedly recalled the one Camaro ZL1 that was delivered to a customer in Texas due to a “quality assessment” that is being made of all the cars currently produced. There have been no details given on why this was done, what the issue with the cars may or may not be, or how long the “assessment” will last. We are guessing that there is some sort of a component defect or safety related concern with the cars that a supplier may need to correct. If it were a matter of simply inspecting the cars for a construction defect, the timeline would seemingly be quick. If there is a flawed or defective component that needs to be fixed and then reproduced and retro-fitted onto the cars from a supplier, that is going to take a while. We’re working the phones for details on this one and will break any news we can dig up when we get it.

Here is the letter sent to dealers regarding the production stoppage of the ZL1 Camaro apparently on 3/2/2012 –

Subject:
Update on 2012 Camaro ZL1 Shipments and DOSP

The purpose of this note is to provide you with an update on 2012 Camaro ZL1 production and vehicle shipment plans.

All Camaro ZL1 models produced to date are currently being held by General Motors for a quality assessment. At this moment, the duration of the hold is undetermined, and may last a few more weeks. As soon as the hold is cleared, a note will be sent to all dealers to advise that 2012 Camaro ZL1 shipments are underway.

Because of the hold, the upcoming Dealer Order Submission Process (DOSP) cycle that was to be dedicated to ZL1 is being postponed. This DOSP cycle was scheduled to start this Thursday, March 1, 2012, and continues through Tuesday, March 6, 2012. A new date for this DOSP cycle will be provided in the near future.

We regret to have to undertake these actions, especially given the high anticipation for the new Camaro ZL1. We ask for your patience and will continue to keep you posted on any developments regarding production and vehicle shipments from Oshawa.

Sincerely,

Obviously, they need to send me one so I can find out the problem for myself.

So GM didn’t find the defect until after the first car was already delivered. This does not speak well to their quality control, especially on a Halo car like the ZL1.
Does GM stand for Generally Malfunctions?

Wow, you sound pathetic don’t you? Should I compare other companies to GM? Like Ford, Dodge, Chrysler, Mercedes, VW ect, who build cars with problems without acknowledging the issue? They shipped one vehicle, and got it back to fix it. You do know they are still torture testing this car in conditions almost 90% of drivers won’t ever let it see. Something came up, and they are fixing it. You should be cheering them on. This is an American Company, and they are doing it right.
