Herman Lewis, one of the greatest names in AMC performance and drag racing has died at the age of 76. Lewis gained fame and stature within the AMC community during a long and illustrious drag racing career that saw him win more than 200 races, big and small, and set many national records along the way. His aluminum heads and blocks are the most exotic and serious parts that AMC racing enthusiasts can access. There is no word on whether or not those special pieces will continue to be produced now that theur patron saint has passed.
Of the many honors bestowed on Lewis during his career, his 2008 introduction into the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame must have ranked pretty high on the list. It was proper recognition for a career that was marked by a dogged refusal to switch away from the brand and equipment he knew and loved, as well as innovation when he created his own parts from scratch.
Lewis held onto his famous red, white, and blue AMX right up until the end. Hopefully the car finds itself into the hands of a capable racer who will continue to pound on it like Herman did for all those years. The drag racing community and of course the AMC community is lesser for the loss of Lewis.
We wish his family and friends the best during this tough time.
