It Ain’t All Bad: GM Opens New Testing Facility in Yuma, AZ

We’re not quite sure how the math works on all this stuff, but somehow GM just opened a new $100 million desert proving grounds in Yuma, Arizona, despite the fact that the company has no money. We hope everyone got paid up front.

The facility was developed in conjunction with the US Army, and through that agreement the Army can use the courses that GM constructed to test their vehicles and equipment.

This is also confusing, since GM recently closed its longtime facility in Yuma, Arizona. The reason for that was urban encroachment. The veil of privacy is tough to maintain when there are multi story houses literally ringing the place. There’s no risk of that happening in Yuma, so this will become the new defacto skunk-works for the General’s warm weather operations. It is well equipped with a main building that houses 40 lifts, several different test tracks, and a black lake.

We’re waiting for our invitation so we can show those boys in engineering how their stuff really gets flogged in the real world.

Here’s a story from the Boston Herald telling the story of the facility.
