Lohnes’ Pic of the Week: The Engine Tree

Here’s another memory from the wild and wooly days at college.

What you see hanging from the tree on a come-along is a 350, 700R4 transmission, and transfer case from a mid ’80s K5 Blazer and yes, this photo was taken in the woods, at night, during a snow storm.

We had been out in the woods the previous week with our trucks and had come across a K5 Blazer that had gotten stuck and was abandoned. We looked the thing over and saw it was a complete truck. It had no license plates or anything on it, so it appeared to be a hunting buggy or just a toy someone used to bomb around the woods. After giving it the once over we decided that if we returned in a week and nothing had happened to it, meaning no one tried to come and get it or move it, we’d snag some parts off of it. Well guess what?

It took a long time to get the truck free. Once we did that we towed it over to a tree, slung a chain over one of the limbs and hooked the come-along onto it. We yanked the driveline out of it, pushed the Blazer out of the way and lowered it into the back of my truck (the same one that was encased in the snow bank in last week’s photo). The added weight did wonders for traction on that way out traversing the snowy trails.

From left to right is: My buddy Dave, a guy named Chris, and me. Adam, our other henchman, was working the camera.

This photo always cracks me up. My wife still shakes her head.
