F1 Driver Back Behind the Wheel After Head Injury

You may remember Felipa Massa’s name. He is the Ferrari F1 team driver that suffered the freak accident while competing at the Hungarian GP. Massa was struck in the head by an errant spring that fell off of Rubens Barrichelo’s car. His recovery has been quicker than expected and technically anyway, he’s back behind the wheel or a racer. CNN.com is reporting that Massa, at home in Brazil, has been behind the wheel of a kart for stints up to sixty laps. That’s no small feat for a guy who’s head was basically caved in nine weeks ago.

The Ferrari team is not going to rush him back into the seat, but says that he is progressing well. There is an outside chance of Massa being able to race in the final contest of the season which takes place as his home track, Interlagos, Brazil.

One of the neat, but admittedly stomach churning parts of the story comes from the repair done to Massa’s head. The doctors actually used a titanium plate to fix him up. We’re not sure what’s more F1 than that.
