The Millionth Porsche 911: Celebrating 54 Years With A World Tour

1963 was the first year that the Porsche 901 was sold…and it didn’t take long for Peugeot to throw a fit, claiming that only they had the right to sell cars with a “_0_” numbering system in France. Rather than fight the issue, Porsche changed the model name to 911 and ever since, it has been an icon. From it’s early days, through the wickedness of the 930 Turbo cars, to the final air-cooled 993s to today, the 911 has been a case study in steady evolution rather than clean-sheet redesigning. Features change, powertrains change, even drive types change. But if you were to park a line of 911s in a row, from 1963 to now, you’d see the family resemblance the entire way through.

One million cars is a healthy milestone for any nameplate, and while cars such as the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette have hit the number in quicker time, that matters not to Porsche, who recently unveiled #1,000,000. Painted in “Irish Green”, a nod to the first car’s paint color, and fitted with custom touches such as the 1960’s era crest on the steering wheel and the hood, the 991.2 will be a museum piece…eventually. And that’s the cool part of what the millionth Porsche 911 will be all about: it’s taking the long way to the museum floor. Porsche themselves said it best:”The one-millionth 911 will not be sold. Before it moves on to enrich the collection at the Porsche Museum, it will embark on a world tour and will take road trips in the Scottish Highlands, around the Nürburgring, and in the USA, China, and beyond.”

We understand Porsche holding onto this one for the museum. But they built a car…at least let it stretch it’s legs before it’s early retirement. We have to wonder…how many miles are going to be on the clock once it finally parks on the museum floor?
