Yesterday, Lohnes found you guys a 1966 Mercury Monterey that was in perfect Rough Start territory…packing a 428, looking like a very well-aged survivor, and priced within the realm of reality, it was a perfect find and you guys went nuts for it. Oddly enough, as Brian was putting the finishing touches on that story, I had found another full-size 1966 Mercury that I was certain that you would love. Since he ran his, I waited to see if I was right about your opinions…
So, with that in mind, consider this how nice the Monterey that Brian found could be. This is a Mercury Monterey S-55, the performance model of the Monterey line. You got the normal bells and whistles, but you also got a hammer under the hood. Even in the 1960s, this was a fading trend for the full-size cars and Mercury was getting close to axing the S-55…the planned Marauder would slot in as the big-boy powerhouse and the upcoming Cougar was going to take the reins as the personal luxury coupe.
We wonder about this particular car, though. The listing for the auction claims that it’s powered by a numbers-matching 410ci MEL V8. But for 1966, this car should have come from the factory with a 345-horsepower 428ci V8. We wouldn’t kick it out of the garage, but it’s an interesting note. Maybe some lucky bidder will find that this Mercury is flying under the radar at Kansas City and will take home a steal.
Stop it! Don’t make me sell my 9C1’s for those Mercs!
Total and utter perfection…..
The 410 was not the MEL series but the FE series engine.
It had a 4.05 bore (390) and a 4.13 stroke (428) Available in the Mercury in
1966 and 1967.
It is a gorgeous Mercury aint it?
428 has a 3.98 stroke the 410 is a 4.05 bore with a 3.98 stroke
You Sir are absolutely right and I am getting absent minded.
Air car to boot!
A 410 is a 390 with a 428 crank, externally balanced as is the 428.
