Best of 2019: A 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix For The Cruiser Set

Best of 2019: A 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix For The Cruiser Set

For years, the go-to car selection for a cruiser or a lowrider was a 1962-64 Chevrolet Impala. They were iconic, the car of choice for a generation who listened to California rap and weren’t in a huge hurry to go anywhere, but were all about being seen in a classic. It was so prevalent that if you were watching MTV, there was an Impala. If you were walking through the halls of my junior high school, there were Rollin’ Hard t-shirts everywhere you looked. Chevrolet’s full-size had achieved cult status.

But what about the other B-body siblings of the time? You didn’t see a lot of Oldsmobile 88 love. You didn’t see a Wildcat wilding out down on the boulevard…at least, not by the time I came around, you didn’t. They were just cars…some lived charmed lives, others were used, abused and sent off to be turned into something else. And they didn’t seem to get as much attention…I didn’t know that the Grand Prix was older than 1969 until I first saw a neighbor’s black 1964 when I was a kid, complete with the badass eight-lug drum wheels.

I like the vibe this 1963 is giving off. The Supreme-style five spoke wheels, the striping, the roof, all of it. In my lifetime, most Grand Prix were front-drivers that had more plastic attached to their body than what you’d see in one block of travel around Rodeo Drive. This black and blue beauty, on the other hand…this Pontiac needs to be seen at sunset, with the marker lights on while burbling up and down the road with all of the windows down.

West coast Bellflower style done to absolute perfection
This car is not for the normie purists. Go low or go home. Maybe find yourself a nice PT Cruiser to drive instead.

Damn. I loath all things GM, but this is ’60’s perfection. I don’t even like skinny white walls, but have to admit, I wouldn’t change a thing on this ride.
