BangShift Project Files: A Turbo Small-Block For The Former Big-Block Mustang GT!

The red 1983 Ford Mustang GT you see hazing the tires into submission has been around BangShift for a decade now, ever since it was introduced as the donor body that was going to house a big-block Ford of epic proportions. Over time, the car did just that, running deep in the 10-second range at ease, checking the box on both Hot Rod’s Drag Week and Rocky Mountain Race Week. The big block came back out and a nitrous-infused small block went in it’s place, and the car was still a sorted twelve-second street-going car…at least, when the tank wasn’t filled with Sunoco 94.

Around springtime, forum member “BBR” started dropping hints that there might be some upgrades happening to the T-top Fox body in the performance department that would render the blue bottle of happiness obsolete, and earlier this month the decision was made: it was time to turbocharge the Mustang. The plan is to tuck in a GT45 that pushes 6-8 PSI into the engine within the engine bay of the car and using a blow-through converted Holley carburetor to get the job done. The plan is to stay within the low 12-second range on 91 octane fuel as low-dollar as possible without resorting to hackery. We’ve seen what he can do with a shoehorn, a big Ford engine that would be a tough fit in a Continental Mark IV and some Crisco, so we can’t wait to see what he does with a hair dryer and some plumbing!
