BangShift Project Files: No, It’s Not A Mustang. It’s An In-Depth 1968 Mercury Cougar Build, Coming Closer To Being Done!

BangShift Project Files: No, It’s Not A Mustang. It’s An In-Depth 1968 Mercury Cougar Build, Coming Closer To Being Done!

First-generation Mercury Cougars are badass cars. In short terms, they are a Ford Mustang that’s slightly longer, certainly more luxurious, and just as capable. And they had style…hidden headlights, sequential taillights, and formal rooflines that exuded class. Strange thing is, you don’t see a lot of love for Mercury Cougars. I’d say “Cougars” in general, but I know exactly what that’d get me from the peanut gallery. But look at what the Cougar became after 1970: first it was the fat cat, then the REALLY fat cat, then one of the ugliest Fox bodies, then the funkiest Aero Fox, before finally becoming the even more unloved version of the MN-12 platform. And don’t ask about the front-drive Cougars. You can’t give one of those away for a reason.

Forum member “langleylad” has been busting his hump on this 1968 Merc for longer than the five years his project thread has existed. He’s been busy with bodywork, suspension work, fabrication well beyond what we can see, the build of the 6.0L GM-based powertrain, and more. And since we last took a look in the project thread, he’s been a busy, busy man. Last time the car had just been coated in metallic silver with black trimming…this time a worked-over Ford 8.8 axle is under the car with Powerstop brakes, headlights from a late-model Dodge Challenger have been fabbed up to fit underneath a grille sourced from Wild Wes Paintworks, the fuel system is in place, and clearcoat by the gallon is being put on. Oh, and it’s sitting on four wheels again. That’s always a plus! We can’t wait to see this beauty finished up, polished up and sitting out in the sun! There are pages upon pages of work that has taken place since our last visit, so go check out the progress!
