BangShift Project Files: Project Ares, A Cheap-Build Craigslist BMW Project That’s About To Get Blown

Buried in the BangShift Project forum is the $5,000 Challenge file. The goal is simple: five grand total to go from nothing to hot rod. Anything goes, and who knows…at some point you might graduate out of the Challenge into a full-fledged, in-depth project. Such is the case for forum member Mykk. He lives in Prescott, Arizona (good man!) and that means that he’s privy to the gold mine that is car hunting in the state. His choice of ride? A 1995 BMW 540i that came factory with a six-speed manual trans. A Beemer…really? Yes sir, and if you need any reason why we’re into the car, go watch the first half of the first Transporter movie…it’ll become real clear. After scoring the BMW for a grand a couple of years back out of Phoenix, he spent some time getting it running and on the road. That meant sorting out the issue between the harmonic damper and the crank trigger to get the car going and spending some months sorting out all of the issues a thousand dollar car could potentially have. Once the 540i was sorted, that’s when the fun kicked in that included some powertrain beefing and suspension fun.

For the past couple of years, the BMW has been doing well, but it’s the next powerplant that has us taking sharp notice. The plans are to supercharge a late 1990s BMW 4.4L mill using an Eaton M112 blower and intercooler system raided from a Jaguar and feeding it with a stand-alone EFI system. The work will be slow and methodical…Mykk intends to test out the EFI system on the current setup before going full-bore into the blower motor.

And the cool thing is that he’s documented the costs the 540i has incurred. Counting everything from buying the car to the parts for the blower motor build, he’s in to the tune of $7,673. Still not too bad for what’s going to be a riot of a machine when finished! Click the link below to check out more on the Beemer that’s BangShift worthy!

Yes – that IS NOT an LS!

I think that this plague of the imagination is losing its hold on the modified car community as creative individuals think outside the LS box and produce such gems as this Beemer!
