BangShift Project Files: The DisAstre Is Fresh Out Of The Paint Booth!

Forum member “Hoffbug” has been busy on his project car, a 1977 Vega that is using the nose and tailpan from a 1976 Pontiac Astre and parts from a Cosworth Vega. The idea is to run an Oldsmobile 215 and TH2ooR4 in the featherweight H-body but before the project build can really take place, there is the one problem to deal with: the H-body. It’s no secret that GM rushed the cars into production, made some questionable decisions involving the production schedule and distribution network, and had almost zero quality control going on in the program. Things like the Vert-a-Pac rail shipment system that let the batteries drain out and the overall lack of rustproofing combined to give GM a black eye that continues on to this day.

With the rust repair finished off, the engine and trans ready to go, the last major detail before piecing the car back together was paint…and this sucker came out nice! The color is a Mercedes-Benz shade called Iridium Silver and it looks pretty good from what we are seeing. Now that the paint is drying, we expect to see work push forward on the little H-body. The world is always a brighter place when a tiny car with a potent V8 is brought to life!

Interesting project, I think he’s going to find the 215 is a weak little engine though, a lot of them in MGBs, make nice cruisers but not much on the horsepower end (250hp-300hp tops), I see an LS (about same weight) in its future. I do love little cars with V8s.

Wow.. I was surprised to see this in my Facebook Feed today! Seems like Ive been at this forever but its coming together. Not expecting anything fast out of this one. Just a cruiser. ( I have a Chevelle with a 535 horse 406, an 8″ converter and 4.10 gears if I want to got raise some hell).

    Thanks Bryan.
