Project Goliath Update: Piddly Projects, Plodding Progress

It has been too long since we brought you any information on progress with our 1966 C50 called Goliath. The main reason is that there hasn’t been too much sexy stuff happening. We’re at that stage of the project where we are sewing up some loose ends and finally getting ready to have the cab floors replaced. We did spend some quality time in the junkyard to grab a new seat, swapped the points out for a junkyard HEI setup provided to us by some awesome BangShifters, and totally exploded a muffler. More on that in a minute.

There isn’t a whole lot of excitement in cleaning up headlight grounds, rewiring tail-lights, wiring up a horn, installing a re-lined parking brake, and making the swap to an HEI ignition from the points setup that was on the truck. We take that back, the whole HEI swap had some excitement.

We wired up the new distributor, plugged our power wire in, cranked, and got nothing. We checked and rechecked everything, cranked again, nothing. A quick tug on the power wire confirmed that we didn’t have it plugged onto the distributor post well enough. With juice flowing we hit the key to see if it would start and were immediately greeted with a major league explosion and a muffler that showed the appearance of being stuffed with C4 explosive. Guess there was some gas vapor in there. Whoops! Our wife ran out of the house in a panic thinking we were dead, and our neighbors ran out of their houses popping champagne corks thinking we were dead. Timing adjusted, the truck now runs minto.

The great dudes at BangShift sponsor Cherry Bomb are taking care of us with a nice ‘Bomb to give the big fellow a little hush. The straight six does sound bad ass through the open pipe.

The other major development was the addition of some new seating for the cab. The old seat was totally disgusting and actually had lice-like bugs living in/on it. Not to mention the old clothing thrown inside it by the previous owner. Yuck!

We hit the local ‘yard and went looking for a suitable seat. We wanted a basic bench seat that was pretty thin and not totally blown out from years of use. We narrowed our choices down to a 1980s Ford vinyl bench and a 1988 Chevy cloth bench. The mounting of the Chevy seat looked perfect for our floor so we went for it. A couple of the holes actually line up with the ’66 holes! It’s a little worn and certainly not perfect but for $50.00 we’re not crying and it is a 1000% upgrade over the grossness that it replaces.

The truck is legal to pass a state safety inspection now, with the exception of the floors. We need to squirrel away a few more pesos and then we’ll make the call to our pal Jon Sandahl at Tube Chassis Designz who will be doing the floor surgery for us.

After that, we’re rolling!

Sorry for the big reporting gap, but even we were struggling for ideas on how to make the rebuild of an old GM truck steering column seem snappy and fun. Hit the link below for some photos showing our progress and the recent adventures we have been on sourcing parts for the truck. Oh yeah, get jealous of our $50.00 seat too!
