This killer 1965 altered-wheelbase Plymouth that we found for sale on RacingJunk.com seems to be a recreation as the seller does not mention any racing history nor does he cite any famous drivers in the car’s past. That may be a good thing because it removes the fear of destroying a piece of history when flogging the injected Hemi on the strip!
While the exact origins of the term “Funny Car” are murky, more than one old timer has told us that the words were used to describe the looks of the altered wheelbase Mopars of the early/mid-1960s. By moving the front and rear axles forward in relation to the body, the cars could hook up better and really plant the rock hard slicks into the pavement.
Famously, Chrysler issued memos to the factory backed racers warning them that wheelstanding the cars would result in their losing them. The factory was looking to win races, not to become a sideshow act. They were also not too keen on sending more parts than they needed to into the field.
This car is powered by a 528ci Hilborn EFI’d Hemi, sports a perfectly appointed interior, and has correct suspension and probably all the weird handling quirks that the originals had. The selling price is a steep $140,000, but the perma-grin you’d have after making a couple laps is priceless.
