Scrapple, Your Guide To The “meh”-Worthy News! This Week: Less Auto, More Electric!

Scrapple, Your Guide To The “meh”-Worthy News! This Week: Less Auto, More Electric!

The leaves are falling, the temperatures are retreating down to comfortable levels, and you can see the end of the racing season start to appear for the year. It’s not over yet…in fact, if you can time it right, now would be a great last chance to go out and try for a personal best before the weather goes south for the year. Meanwhile, the smell of pumpkin, apples, and the rich food that comes with the historic harvest time is in full effect. Go enjoy it. We’ll be up to our usual fun…while we try to figure out what to be for Halloween for these parties we keep getting invited to. Maybe “hungry Pennywise the Dancing Clown” would be a good option? Either way, we’ll keep doing what we do, so take a look at some stories from this past week that we wanted to show you real quick. A light roasting, some nutmeg, some artificial pumpkin flavoring, some cinnamon, and some frothed milk, and voilá, Scrapple!

1. An electric Hummer. I’m not making the jokes. I want to…just not gonna do it.When GM brought the Hummer brand to market, they were almost too brash and over the top. It was one thing to have a real-deal HMMWV (re-named “Hummer H1” for the civilian market) but to have dolled-up variations of the Tahoe and Colorado that looked like Tonka toys? No wonder the Earth Liberation Front torched dealerships. By 2008, “Hummer” was a bad word, synonymous with gluttonous excesses in automotive form. Even the Ford Excursion, which was also derided, was able to claim that it was designed to be a carry-all vehicle and not a cheeseball spin-off.

Well, the rumor mill is currently claiming that GM is honestly considering reviving the nameplate for a new electric truck that would appear sometime after 2021, possibly sharing a platform with GMC and Cadillac. Naturally, Hummers would be marketed as a premium vehicle…like a Cadillac or a GMC…but should it return? Honestly, let the name remain dead.

2. Turning a Brit classic into an electric delivery van.Hooray, more EV news. At least this one is kind of cool. English brand Morris Commercial is set to make a comeback with a new, electric throwback delivery van. The “JE”, which takes styling cues from the 1952-61 Morris Commercial J/Austin 101, is only being teased at the moment but a small EV delivery vehicle could actually be a solid offering in Europe. At least the styling looks pretty solid, coming pretty close to what a classic J looks like.

3. Ford’s “not a Mustang” EV SUV will have rear-drive.The Mach 1 Mach E Mustang-Inspired EV SUV that Ford has been working on for a late 2020 rollout might be able to at least behave a bit like the car it’s aping it’s styling from. In a press release that has since been deleted, Electrify America, Ford’s partner in the EV program, noted that the upcoming vehicle will have a 300-mile range when combined with the larger battery offering and rear-wheel drive. RWD? We will hold back judgement one way or another until Ford actually shows off the mystery horse, but even with RWD we aren’t quite excited yet.

4. Speed limits? NEIN!

A vote to restrict speeds on Germany’s famous autobahns has failed. The proposal to limit vehicle speeds to 130 KPH (81 MPH) was backed by the deputy of Germany’s police union and the Green Party, while the transportation minister wasn’t having any of that. The autobahn is a point of pride for the German auto industry…fast cars that can handle long stints at high speeds has been a hallmark of Deutchland, and is a sort of Mecca for gearheads. Losing that would be a sad day indeed.

5. Consider adopting a pony.GM really, really would like for you to take another look at the Chevrolet Camaro. So much so that they are taking point-blank aim at their natural rivals with their latest offer: If you own or lease a Ford Mustang, GM will add $2,000 to the $1,000 in cash on the hood through the end of October. And that’s any Camaro, from the LS to the ZL1.

Now, what are they going to do about that pesky Dodge Challenger that is still eating both of their lunches?

Wel, now, that’ll be a great Hummer! It already has a smaller carbon footprint than a Prius, so now all the self-centered enviro nutjobs can drive a real vehicle. Good to see there’s still a few real Germans in power, as well. When I was stationed there in the ’70’s, we were told that if there was a left lane bandit holding up traffic, it was legal to push them out of the way!

  2. Pizzandoughnuts

Unfortunately, we have allowed these dicks to tell us we have to drive appliances now. But of course more pollution to manufacture and recycle, but hey out of sight, out of mind.
Imagine what a car show may look like in 20 years in there crap can “letic” cars.
Where’s that roadkill tank when you need it!

  3. Skeptical

Electric Hummer sounds like some computer accessory for VR porn…. Joking aside, It sorta makes sense for them to build an electric version. The people that are buying electric cars are willing to pay a premium for them. Hummer owners in general were willing to shell out the cash. Maybe they are eyeballing competing with G wagon territory instead of trying to use Cadillac. Who knows what they are thinking though. Now if we could just get them to do something special with Pontiac…

  4. chevy hatin' mad geordie

An electric hummer to shove up the ass of electric car perverts to give them the thrill of their lives!
