Smart Guy Eloquently Says Cash for Clunkers Sucks

Jeffrey Miron is an economics lecturer at Harvard and an occasional contributor to CNN.com. In his most recent piece Miron blows massive holes in the reasoning behind the Cash for Clunkers program and manages to do it in a tactful and professional manner. Boy, do we admire guys like that.

Miron’s thesis that the C4C program is essentially a bailout “dressed up like an environmental program” is spot on. He expounds on a couple of other basic elements that we’ve already taken issue with and seems to legitimize our ideas on the negative longterm effects that this program will have.

We had to reread the fact that he lectures at Harvard fifteen or sixteen times after finishing the story because, well, it’s logical and makes some salient points—not something the Cambridge, Massachusetts, “genius society” is known for doing on a regular basis.
