Stolen Jaguar XK-E Recovered And Returned To Owner 46 Years Later

Stolen Jaguar XK-E Recovered And Returned To Owner 46 Years Later

It was September 1967, the place was New York. Ivan Schneider bought himself a Jaguar XK-E roadster, a white one. It was the first luxury car he purchased. In his eyes, it was the prettiest one he ever owned. And in March 1968, just six months after he purchased it, some bastard made off with it. For forty-six years Schneider had no idea what had become of his prized Jaguar.

Fast forward to present day. During a routine check by a Customs and Border Patrol analyst, a red flag was thrown on a Jaguar XK-E that was being shipped from Southern California to the Netherlands. A quick investigation dredged up the original incident report from New York and the car was returned to the California port from where it was shipped out. Customs contacted Schneider, who had to be convinced that he wasn’t being pranked, and told him of the recovery. Using a video teleconference, Schneider got to lay eyes on the Jaguar for the first time in years.

According to investigators, the Jaguar was owned by a man in the San Joaquin Valley area for about forty years before it was sold to a flipper, who had been brokering a deal for the car to be sold to a collector in the Netherlands. It’s not known yet how the car got from New York to California or if the long-term owner had any role to play in the car’s disappearance so long ago.

The Jaguar, which was valued at about $5000 in 1968, is currently worth about $24,000…it’s in a useable but rough shape. However, Schneider plans to have the XK-E restored once the car is returned to him.
