(Lead Photo: Nissan USA) Have you ever seen the movie Strange Days? It’s from the early 1990s and it’s one of my favorites for many reasons which I will skip, but there is one connection I want to link here: in the movie there is a technology called SQUID…effectively, a sensor setup that, via a kind of mini-disc player, can transfer the sight, sense and physical feel of another person’s experiences into your own body via the headset that sends signals to your brain. For 1994, it was pretty trippy. Nearly twenty-five years later, Nissan is trying something out that works in somewhat the same way. Called Brain-To-Vehicle (B2V) technology, the idea is to speed up a driver’s reactions times and to allow cars to be more adaptable to conditions. The concept utilizes two focal points, prediction and detection, to get driver-assist technology to step in earlier and take action quicker. Using a device that measures brain wave activity that is analyzed by autonomous systems, drivers will move along as the system scans for signals that might indicate a driver movement. This will, in turn, cause the assist system to step in before the brain signal moves the hand or foot. That’s the goal, anyways. Nissan claims that the system can take action 0.2-0.5 seconds faster than the driver in staged scenarios.
If you want to see the future as Nissan hopes you’ll enjoy, you can find the B2V technology on display at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which opens up on Sunday, January 7th, 2018.
Well – that won’t work in Trumpland as they ain’t got no dang brains…
Thanks for bringing in the politics. Most come to this site for relief from everyday life so nobody appreciates it no matter which side of the political spectrum they fall on.
Well this seems totally legit. The same company that promotes being a braindead, daydreaming moron while cruising at speed through construction zones is going aiming to have a vehicle react to the drivers thoughts before they can do so with their own extremities. So the vehicle, while at speed in a construction zone, will react to X-wing fighters and Star Wars phaser battles the has no business riding a bicycle, let alone operating a motor vehicle, “driver” is dreaming about. What exactly does Nissan have against the safety of everyone outside of their vehicles anyway?
Its the same reasons for EFI and electronic engine systems so a non thinker with no mechcanical knowledge can drive a car. It use to be you had to operate a choke and that separated the men from the boys now any body can drive a car. As driving becomes easier the driver becomes dumber hence the thinking car. Do worry for 10k and more the poor will still not buy one and only the rich will run you over. Foget it our days are over and monkeys will be driving cars soon. So who went into orbit first around the earth wasn\’t a human.
Oh look, a squirrel…..
